Our Embarrassing Childhood Definitions of Being Rich

Natalie (00:00) Hey everybody, welcome to another episode of Sugar Spice and Spirits. I'm your host, Natalie Pilkington, along with Mindy and Kelly. And we are here today. We're talking about things, you know, we like to mix it up a little, go back to our childhood. We're kind of retro in it here, Gen X. And what did our friends have that we thought they were rich because they had? So I want to know what you thought your friends had that made them rich. Put it in the comments. We wanna know. We wanna hear from you because we have lots of ideas and lots of thoughts of things that are so trivial now. And now we realize that we've got our big girl panties on and it may not have been such a rich deal after all. So, ladies, thanks for being here. What are you guys sipping? Because we always start with that sip of the day. Mindy, you wanna go first? Mindy Price (00:48) Yeah, I will tell you something. And apparently I thought I was super rich because I accidentally ordered six bottles of this for my son's graduation a couple years ago, which started me on the journey of finding great tequila. And so fun side fact, I at first wanted sugar spice and spirits to be sugar, spice, and tequila because I was hoping we would get sponsored by a brand and we could, you know, do different tequilas from across the world because I learned how to drink it years ago. I was KELLY (00:54) Yeah. Mindy Price (01:15) super sick on it and so I did not want to have any. And then somebody brought this one over to my house and they said, just try it. It's wonderful. Well I thought it was so good. And as I said, I went ahead and ordered six more bottles to be delivered to the house. Don Julio 1942. Do the math. It was a hard lesson learned. This bottle was actually given to me and I've I've saved it when I was doing some different speaking gigs. I wasn't full time, but I was doing it and that was one of the presents that I received. So I've had it for a while, but I'm doing over ice because I'm not gonna waste it. typically I'll sip on it, but it's hot outside today. So Don Julio, nineteen forty two. So cheers to you. What do you have, Kelly? Natalie (01:56) I'm a little jealous. I'm a little jealous. KELLY (01:58) That's a that looks amazing. Natalie (02:00) Drinker, look at her Kelly, it wasn't you this time. KELLY (02:03) So yeah, premature drinker. That's all right. We'll let you go this time. so in in celebration of our our topic today, which is what made you feel rich, I didn't become a wine drinker until about probably about ten, twelve years ago. And I you know, of course it started out sweet wines and everything, and then I started kind of acquiring a taste. My favorite wine is is a Cabernet. But I don't I don't drink it all the time. I typically don't drink during the week and unless unless we're in a podcast. I won't typically open up a full bottle of wine unless I've got somebody with me. Now I love a great cabernet, one of my favorite things to celebrate is is Caymus It's a little expensive, but we always and we always do that on a special occasion. But what I keep around my house, if I just want to enjoy that little sip of wine every once in a while, is Bye. Natalie (03:00) That is the good stuff right there, Kelly. That's the good stuff. KELLY (03:03) And and let me tell you what, it is it actually is good. This is my favorite brand, the black box cabernet. And it comes, it comes in whites and other different reds and stuff. And but you know, I only I may only drink like a small glass like this, but and I so I don't want to open a full bottle because it will it will go bad. And but when I get down to the bottom, I rip the box apart and I take the bladder out and I squeeze every last little bit out of it. So Natalie (03:30) Tell me you're an alcoholic without telling me no I'm just gonna. KELLY (03:33) Yeah. Yeah. So but yeah, so I for you know, to celebrate our topic today, I I went with with the box wine and and it's actually pretty it's actually really good, you know. So Natalie (03:43) No, but that's smart too, because you can't like to drink a whole bottle of wine. Like we we enjoy a beverage, but I can tell you we are we are not alcoholics. We enjoy a a a sip, we enjoy a refreshment. but getting drunk every day is not our cup of tea. We like to be productive and enjoy our day. So having that KELLY (03:57) Yeah. Yes, yes. Mindy Price (04:01) She does the disclaimer. So I have to say this so funny. So you brought that out. And I was like, because I'll never forget my best friend Michelle. She unfortunately, like Kelly's late husband, passed away from glioplastoma 19 years ago. Kelly's husband, of course, more recent than that. But she knew wine, Kelly, and she we would wine and dine our clients literally and had such a good time. And I'll never forget when she was like Mindy. There's this thing called black box and it's not like the cheapy cheapy like, so what's the episode today, Natalie? Like what made you think you were rich? Well, if somebody showed up with box wine, you're like, they're not. So Michelle made black box cool. And and so a bot, y'all, that box of wine is four equivalent to four bottles and it's so affordable. You like that one. That was Michelle's favorite. I actually like Nighthawk. I like their bourbon barrel version. I feel like I don't get a headache, whereas with that one I do. But that one was the one that made me go, okay. Even though I go to Napa and you know have lots of different wine. If you knew what was behind me, you would be like, So KELLY (04:47) Mm-hmm. Mindy Price (05:07) Kudos to the boxed wine, y'all. It is okay and it's a little more mainstream than you would think, but be careful which one you choose because you could choose one that will give you a very bad headache, just like your tequila, which is why I went on this journey to find a good tequila and a good boxed wine. Natalie (05:23) You know, thank goodness for Kelly saying we couldn't call it sugar, spice, and tequila. We had to call it something else. So Sugar Spice and tequila was not the name of the podcast. Sugar Spice and Spirits was the name because of Kelly coming in with her common sense. Even though I have some tequila here, I have some batch nuevo tequila. This is not my favorite tequila. I, you know, all the time we're like, it's so good. Hmm, this isn't my bag. However, It isn't my pura vida, Costa Rica shot glass. So here we go, ladies. Here's our sip of the day. Natalie (06:04) Letner's slummet down there in the box wine. I'm gonna have to try that Nighthawk one. I'm not a big wine drinker, so but yeah. It's KELLY (06:11) the Nighthawk either. So so I I'll try that. And so I will tell you that if for those of you the bigger like the the the Franzia that like they have like the chillable red and everything. So I did pull the whole redneck thing one weekend and we went to Lakey to Riden River Ranch and I didn't want to carry a bunch of bottles and stuff. So I bought that Franzia wine, ripped the box apart. Natalie (06:14) I do like the bourbon. KELLY (06:36) Took the bladder out, just threw the whole thing in the ice chest. And so when you needed it, all you do is pull that plastic thing out and put it in your cup and off you go. So Mindy Price (06:44) Kelly, as long as you can keep the the lip that you squeeze clean, you can throw it in the frio right there. It's gonna stay cold for you. So just saying, maybe somebody will admit something. KELLY (06:53) Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. So think if you need your little wine, you know, your little wine hacks and you want to know how to keep things cool and we're the best, ask us because we're gonna give you our opinion. It may not be the best one, but you know, hey, it's always fun. So buddy. Natalie (06:57) It's called the Frio River for a reason. Hey guys, we'll give you the best tips on that one. We're not alcoholics, you're an alcoholic. So some of the things I did post this out to my Facebook people, just like, hey, what are some of the things? Because, you know, call waiting was one of those things. We take that for granted, you know, or or what is that? Yeah, call waiting. But I remember on the phone when you would call somebody and you'd star 69 and call the last caller, like it was before caller ID, and then we got the caller ID box and you could see. everybody who called you. So you took a risk if you were calling somebody you had a crush on and they didn't answer, you could hang up but you didn't know if they had caller ID. It started to get pretty interesting. Mindy Price (07:57) And that's when there was star sixty seven. They couldn't see who was calling. It means they couldn't see you were calling them. You blocked the caller ID. Mm-hmm. KELLY (08:00) Yep. Natalie (08:01) Which was what was Star Sixty Seven? KELLY (08:07) Yeah. I do I do that with some spam callers. If a spam caller calls me consistently, I'll Star sixty seven and back and I'll be like, Hello, hello. Well, of course they don't answer me, so I'm like, Okay, block. So yeah, I still Mindy Price (08:21) Okay, then you just taught us something, Kelly. I didn't actually know. You can do star sixty seven from your cell phone now? Natalie (08:28) Like it's still legit. So can you still do someone back with Star Sixty Nine? KELLY (08:35) I haven't tried that. I just did the Star Six Sex. I just did the Star Sixty Seven because I didn't win them didn't want them to know I was going back. Mindy Price (08:36) Somebody needs to try it. So Natalie (08:36) yeah. Yeah, because then they immediately, hey Kelly, did you want to share your timeshare? Because we can get you out of that. KELLY (08:46) Yeah. Mindy Price (08:47) my gosh, for those of you that are just listening and not watching us, I so badly right now want to star 67 one of them to see if it actually works, but I don't want to waste time because Nat Natalie's actually on a time crunch today. Natalie (08:59) I gotta get to my listing. I'm doing a video, so here we go. color TV. So having that color TV or even a remote control TV because we were the remote control for our parents growing up. Like I remember, hey, change the channel. I have to, you know, I want to watch something else. And you go over to the dial and change and the the rabbit ears in the back that you'd like mess with to get it going. Like, like that was a Mindy Price (09:23) Natalie in the back, hold on. We had rabbit ears, we had an antenna up top that if it wasn't working and something was important, you were going up there. So it was like a you were really dedicated to whatever you wanted to watch. Because if the antenna upstairs didn't work. KELLY (09:36) And Natalie (09:38) Antenna was for rich people. KELLY (09:41) Well and then but let lets me even move forward to where when some of the neighborhoods finally got cable and you would seek out the people that had cable because then like growing up, if you wanted to go, you know, on Friday nights you want to go watch night tracks or, you know, when when T V came out and everything and it was like, my god, we all gotta meet over at so and so's house because they have cable and everything or Or when you all of a sudden you go to a house and instead of having beta they have VHS and and all those things and and and all of a sudden it's like, wait, you have a microwave? What it cooks food how fast? So okay, everyone keep in mind, everyone, I'm 10 years older than them. So some of the stuff, some of the stuff that I saw coming around was already in place, you know, for them, but but it's it's still the same thing. That like when all of a sudden the first person that walks out with the cordless phone as opposed to the long cord throughout the house. Not not the cell phone, but just the cordless phone. It was like we had the cord long ends and out and so Natalie (10:44) Yeah, you had the docking stations to charge. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mindy Price (10:49) Listen, I thought my dad had made it because he rolls up in his car, his work car, and he literally has this whole contraption bolted into his car with the cord. And that was like the first car phone that I remember. It was it was literally bolted in. So then he was really cool when he had the bag phone and it still had the cord. And he would walk around with this with his bag phone. But then when he had the brick that was the original cell phone, you know, it was that was that was something else. KELLY (11:20) Yeah. One of my favorite shows, I'm as embarrassed as I am to say it now, was Charlie's Angels. I love a girl, I want to be a detective and I want all that good stuff. and it was funny because they had the car phone, but it was so funny because when they picked it up It looked like this the real big receiver, like you see on I mean, it was like the whole phone and y you know, now we've got the little sleek phones and and little one piece, but yeah, it was like the full phone and it was just it was so funny to see that 'cause it it yeah, I look back and like, my God, just I watched that show, which anyway, it was great. So Natalie (12:00) They thought car phones were gonna revolutionize everything like AI is now. Like they think, it's gonna make us so much more productive, or even like computers, you know, when we first got the computers. speaking about rich people, like with having the internet or not the internet, we're cable. So in our country, like in our country, in our country, in our country and our property we got out at the ranch. They call us the rich neighborhood because we got fiber optics laid all the way out there. So everybody's so super excited that the rich people came to town to bring them fiber optics, but they're not so happy because their taxes are starting to go up because of the rich neighborhood. So, you know, it's it's a catch 22 when you start coming on up. But yeah, we're not really the rich neighborhood. But it's funny because the people out there that don't have fiber optics, because they're country folk, they just don't have it as much. It's like those things that that matter, right? KELLY (12:54) Yeah. Mindy Price (12:54) Well, Natalie, think about the house. If somebody had a two story house back in the day, my goodness. A two story house or a formal dining room. What? Like you had to be rich. KELLY (13:00) My goodness. Yeah, they were Mm-hmm. Natalie (13:09) So s somebody put on here, Richard Drake, put going to the Pizza Hut or Pizza In Buffet. So you got to actually go in versus getting a pizza, you know, because remember pizza was delivered or you picked it up, which it still is. This is all before Eber Eats Uber Eats. There were like two or three places in town that you could do takeout or delivery, and that was typically Chinese or pizza. And then there was was another another little inventive entrepreneur or restaurant owner that would do some sort of delivery. But going actually into a place to sit down and dine, that was going out to eat. Now everybody goes out to eat and it's almost like a luxury if you have somebody that cooks at home, even knows how to cook. KELLY (13:52) Yeah. Mindy Price (13:52) Hold on, y'all gotta remember I'm the girl that thought I was fancy because I had my favorite snack was a ketchup sandwich and ice in my milk. So, you know. So to be able to go out to eat. So then at McDonald's, if you could order a happy meal and you didn't have to order off that side little cheap cheap menu, you thought you were pretty you thought you were pretty fancy too. Natalie (14:14) Yeah. What about having a car? Like I didn't have a car growing up a lot. So I we walked everywhere and then when we got a car it was like fancy. But then it then it's like the next thing is a car with AC or a car without ball tires, right? It's like it just progressively or a car KELLY (14:28) Or like all the electric windows. You don't have to crank, you're like, wait, just push a button and it's yeah. Or remember eight track, then you go to cassette, then you go to C D and now you have XM radio or Pandora that all that stuff. I mean, yeah, I remember, you know, all of that stuff and what was the funniest thing too is that a few of my a couple of my friends had the big, huge, fancy, elaborate Waterbeds. Remember if your friend had a waterbed? That was that was just yeah, that was that was just the coolest thing to have a Natalie (15:00) Ocean in the ocean. Yes. Didn't we have a waterbed sales guy that was like really crazy? Like he had the curly kinky hair and he's always like try superior waterbed. You'll sleep like a baby on a superior waterbed. KELLY (15:18) Yes. he he was like the mattress mac of waterbeds. Natalie (15:22) Yes, it was. Now they got outlawed in all the apartments. Imagine those. I I need to hook up my water hose to fill up my waterbed. Can you imagine those apartments? KELLY (15:30) Yeah. Yes. And they would never let you have a waterbed if you were in the second if you were not on the first floor because they were like, We're not gonna take chance of that thing leaking and and flooding down below, but my god, I've totally forgot about super Yeah, he was obnoxious. Well he got the point across, didn't he? Mindy Price (15:44) Water beds. Yeah you did. Okay, Natalie, going back to real estate, remember when if you bought a house that had a granite countertop, you clearly were rich. KELLY (15:58) Mm-hmm. Natalie (15:59) Yeah. KELLY (15:59) Yeah. Natalie (16:00) Absolutely. And it wasn't for Micah. You even went we went to Butcher Block for a little while, I think, there too. twenty five KELLY (16:06) Yep. Yeah. Or refrigerators that have the ice dispenser on the outside instead of having to open it to pull the tray out and even an ice maker altogether. But then it was really fancy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Or or when you just walk up and you just go, and it fills up with ice and you're just going, Wow, that's so cool. Natalie (16:11) yeah. In an idea. And I said it wasn't mom cracking the ice every morning and night. As Kelly turns her head sideways and puts it in like a generally. But so Earl Galston said 25 inch color TV in a cabinet with the stereo record player. For a long time we had to watch a nine inch black and white. Can you imagine a nine, a nine inch? I probably had that handle on the pack with the little antenna that came up on the front. A car with AC that was not a station wagon. The family, the family mobile was a station wagon. KELLY (16:31) Yeah. Mindy Price (16:57) Hold on, Allie, back it up for just a minute. Think about the TVs. Now, for me, of course, you had the little TVs, yes. But then when somebody had the big screen box TV that was like on the floor, and you could I mean if you went to somebody's house and they had that big screen TV, you you you was rich. You were rich. Natalie (17:11) Box T V, yes. KELLY (17:20) Yeah. So I and and I I know y'all y'all always laugh at me so much, about my Disney stuff, but one of my favorite rides at Disney is called the Carousel of Progress. And it is it was it's literally Walt Disney's vision of what the future would have been. And it's closed right now because they're act they're having to catch up because what is so strange, it's been there since I'm gonna I early, a long time. And it starts way back when you know, in the in the forties and then goes forward. Well, the funny thing is, is that twenty twenty years ago when you would go, it would show a house that basically had Alexa when it would say, Hey, you know, turn the stove up to, you know, four hundred degrees and they're doing had their vert they have their virtual stuff on their face where they're playing the games and and everything and so they realize now that they're having to close it And refurbish it and update it for neck for the future. Because in his eyes, we are where he saw things 40 years from where he and and it was and they'll never get rid of it because it was it was his vision. So if you ever get the chance to go on YouTube and just look at the carousel of progress and see it's it's totally animated. It's incredible what his thought processes are. And when you look back and you see the old refrigerators that had the big block ice in there and it shows the all the different exercise equipment from all those years ago and everything, it's really cool to see. But when you look at some of the things that we've got now that we take for granted, like you said, remote control TVs and you know, Alexa turned the I mean, remember when the when the clapper came off and and or came out and all the lights would go on and go off and and you know now it's like Alexa. Turn the T V on and and you know, start yeah, I've got a remote control starting my car. Natalie (19:18) Jeep, I don't buy the light I do clap my hands and I still still didn't turn off. Brian will get up and turn it off for me, though. I'm okay. Let's go. KELLY (19:22) Yeah. I know. Mindy Price (19:25) So so Kelly, you said something else. So you were like, so think about this. We used to think if somebody had a home gym, like literally what was a home gym? Even if they just had barbells and like different things, if somebody had a home gym, clearly they were rich. Yeah. KELLY (19:41) Yeah. Yeah. Or fail. Natalie (19:41) Yeah. Mindy Price (19:44) Yeah, I did this. I'm gonna totally change gears on you, but I wore this shirt on purpose. I wanted to make sure I got it out. So I if like, do y'all remember when if somebody would show up in a fancy shirt that sparkled and had the good sequence? Because there's a difference. like, they must be rich to be able to wear that. You know, and and now it's just you you just never know what people are wearing, what's authentic, what's not. But back then, depending on what somebody would wear, they have to be rich because of that, or they have to be this. KELLY (20:01) yeah. Mindy Price (20:13) think about so you would see somebody with a big diamond ring and you're like, they they have to be rich. Now it's like everybody's buying, not saying it for or against or anything like that, but man made. I remember when I got this ring and it was like I found it and I was just it's a whole story I won't bore you all, but platinum, you know, platinum instead of silver or white gold or gold, you know. And nowadays it's just it's kind of like all of these things. I remember when I saw a woman for the first time with a tennis bracelet, and I was like, Natalie (20:13) Yeah. KELLY (20:32) Mm-hmm. Natalie (20:33) Yeah, yeah. KELLY (20:43) Yeah. Mindy Price (20:43) I will have made it when I get a tennis bracelet. Now I'm just like, I need to find a really good man-made diamond tennis bracelet because I feel like they're starting to make a comeback. But there's a key there. Man-made diamond tennis bracelet. KELLY (20:56) Yeah. Lap lab lab grown. Yeah. Yeah. So but okay, back to when you go to like certain places to eat. if you went to downtown Houston, you know, and and went remember the the spindle top that spun around and and all a lot of these fancy restaurants. Well I'll never forget I went on a date one time and and and he was just really trying to impress me and we went to this I don't remember where it was, but we went to this really nice fancy restaurant and I thought, Wow, this guy must have really good money and you know all Mindy Price (21:08) Yes. KELLY (21:25) He whipped out a two for one coupon and I like going, gee. Okay. Well, either either you're broke, I'm a cheap date, I don't know. You know, neck next week it's gonna be Rhett McDonald Rhett McDonalds or something, or maybe he's just yeah, maybe he's frugal, maybe yeah, whatever. And I mean Mindy Price (21:41) You need to look him up. What if you look him up now? And he's like this multimillionaire because he knew how to ration his money. KELLY (21:46) I'm gonna be pissed. I'm gonna be pissed. I'm like, yeah. Natalie (21:49) Okay, well let me run through a few of these. Obviously, new clothes, name brands, like those, obviously. not having to figure out by looking what's in the pantry. Like that's still my life. I don't know. Like now they AI helps with that, right? You take a picture of the pantry in your deep freeze. Hey, what can I do? But back in the day, how do I make something tasty for the family? I remember the pot of soup. My mom was really great with that. vacations, you know, like it wasn't a standard. Everybody took a vacation every year or two. KELLY (21:56) Mm-hmm. Natalie (22:18) You know, two vacations a year. KELLY (22:19) Yeah. Mindy Price (22:19) You flew hold on. You didn't road trip. You got on an airplane. You're rich. KELLY (22:26) So yeah, because I I grew up with with a single mom and so I went on vacations every every summer with my with my mom and my grandmother, which my grandmother, my grandfather paid for, but with a single mom. But I had friends that every Christmas they took a ski trip. Wow. That that that's crazy. And yeah, I just thought, wow, well it's 'cause they have a mom Natalie (22:26) Yeah. Been staying at grandma's house or an auntie's house, you don't know, but still, that's what Daryl Dyke with Norbal Noble Mortgage. He said he said flying. Like, I remember when I took my first flight, I was in second or third grade, and I flew to Midland. Like I flew from Midland to Houston, but to visit my grandparents. My mom and I lived in West Texas and Alpine. And so when I flew back to Midland, I was straight, straight tomboy. Like I didn't fix my hair. I wore hand-me-down blue jeans. Like I was. butch. Like I hung out in the trees. I I was that was me. And I came home KELLY (23:20) Which Mindy Price (23:22) Natalie, you knew what snipe o hunting was. Remember that one? We still have to do it with Kelly. Natalie (23:26) Yes. Yes, yes. But my grandma curled my hair, put the sailor cap on me, a cute little plaid skirt dress, and I look like I had a little schoolgirl uniform. I got off the plane and I'm staring at my mom and I'm standing there with the flight person who was with me, the flight attendant or the stewardess or whatever they want whatever they are, the nice lady. And I'm like, there's my mom and my mom's looking at me and she's like, That's not my daughter. I'm like, Mom, right here, right here. She didn't recognize me because I looked so different. But that was my first flight and I was in second grade. That was fun. That was amazing. I flew by myself too, like. KELLY (23:59) Wow. Mindy Price (24:02) That's impressive. Natalie (24:03) Backyard pool. Mindy Price (24:05) if somebody had a pool, yes. Even if even if now remember this too. So if you did I mean if you had an underground pool, wow. But if you had one of the fancy above ground pools, you were pretty cool for a while too. KELLY (24:05) yeah. Natalie (24:18) Fancy with the deck. Gotta KELLY (24:20) Yeah. Natalie (24:20) have all that deck around it. KELLY (24:20) Yeah. I I always thought the funniest thing so so Ron Paul, who ran for president, he's a he's a doctor and he lives in Lake Jackson. He was the he was the OBGYN doctor of all things. When people say, Ron Paul delivered my baby. Can you imagine if you say, Yeah, the president, if he'd made president, the president delivered my baby? But I just thought it was so cool because we went we went to school with with his kids. Rand, who's one of our, you know, senators, and and then Robert, who's a doctor now also. We used to go swim at their at their house all the time and and the funny thing was someone's like, If you could tell everyone that you peed in Ron Paul's pool, boy, you are it and I was like think I did maybe. So but now the funny thing is is that one of one of my investment properties, one of my rental homes is on the same street as what Ron Paul. So I I still I'm like, I live around the corner from I have a house around the corner from Ron Paul. And some people are like who? Never mind. Natalie (25:03) Yeah. So another person said, Jennifer Mills, who's down a big bench, she said a two-story home. Somebody said brick, a house with brick. Lacey Mills said that. two-story house with a pool, Lori Deborah, Kelly Baker, Jordash jeans. This this one's kind of funny. A garage and a dad. And I guess that wouldn't make sense. Your dad was home in the garage tinkering. KELLY (25:24) Yep. Mindy Price (25:27) Yes. KELLY (25:34) Yeah. Yeah. Mindy Price (25:45) Yes, if your dad was in the garage building something, doing something, clearly. Yep. Natalie (25:45) That was a wholesome Yeah, like at first I laughed at that. I was like, what? But then now that I think of it in the perspective like a garage and about, yeah, that's wholesome. They always had the air compressor hose hooked up and could fix anything, right? Like that's that is a sign of wealth. That makes you wealthy. So to all the dads out there, I hope your father's day was great and I hope you're tinkering in the garage, if that's what you like. KELLY (26:05) Yeah. Yes. Yes, absolutely. Absolutely. So but on on a different note, and this is a totally different topic. I would like to I would like to see again different topic. Those who's you know, my parents were divorced and my father, although he was very involved, lived outside of Dallas, but my mom and I had to basically learn everything. You know, we had to find for ourselves if if we had to fix it, we had to figure it out, didn't have the internet, we just had to figure it out. And so we became very very seasoned and very resilient and learned how to do stuff because we didn't have a lot of money, so we couldn't just go buy a new ceiling fan or go buy a new this or a new that. So we kinda had to figure out how to how to stick the the screwdriver in the VCR and and get it un unclogged or whatever it was. so for it I mean it was it was kind of cool to see how growing up in a single parent, whether it's mom or dad, either one, where you kind of had to learn on your own and It's like one of those things like my friend Susie, I had to I had to I changed her headlight today. She goes, How do you know this is stuff? And I'm like, Well, my mom and I didn't have the money to do it, so we had to do it ourselves. So to ha to have the dad that loved to tinker in the garage and stuff, definitely a bonus. So I mean, I can see where that's that's that's of a cool that's kind of a cool memory. Natalie (27:30) but my mom and I always had the the book for our car. So we could like she would go out there and work on it. She would do all this great stuff, which is where I learned a lot of my resilience from, which now she doesn't do anything. I can't, I can't get the woman to do much, but it's it's she embodied me like it wasn't. It can't be done. It's like how do we get it done? It's not like woe is me. It's like let's figure it out. KELLY (27:54) Well, and you know what, along those lines, when when you grow up and and maybe you don't have a lot of money, and maybe you have a lot of money, but the reason why you have a lot of money is because your parents are frugal and they want to hold hold on to it, whatever the case is. But I it it we make a funny joke about it now where when back then you had to have the book to figure out how to how to fix it. Now it's like you you call someone, you call the repairman. And me, the funny joke is, my gosh, you know, my windshield wiper flop fell off. I I gotta go buy a new car. And Trevor's like, You don't need a new car. I'm like, Yes, I do. So it's funny when you've got the money. it is easy to pick up the phone and call someone, but I was always blessed. I lived next door to to the Hertis. Mike and Chris grew up with them. They terrorized me for the most part growing up, but I always knew them and their father. live next door. So if we ever had an issue, we could always go next door. My mom's younger brother, Uncle Dale, could fix freaking anything. And so it was always as long as you had a phone number or you could go knock on the door next door and say, Hey, we have a problem. neighbors, friends, anything that that came up, you always had someone to to help you because if you didn't have the money to just pick up the phone and call the repair man. or For women sometimes you didn't know who to call. Who who who to call. Mindy Price (29:22) So, Kelly, think about this. When you think about that, like the perception of and because of a resourcefulness, knowing who to call, what to do, people might have thought, even though your mom was a single mom and you were raised in that household, they might have got thought, my gosh, they're so rich because anytime there's a problem, it gets fixed. They just didn't know your connections, how resourceful you were. So there's a lot of that perception. So going back to some of those things where you think, my gosh. fancy stuff. You have to be rich. Do y'all remember when you were younger and you actually went out to eat, not just out to eat, because that was something, but when you got to not only order an appetizer, but you got to order dessert. Like that was like, my gosh. Like, and I'll I will remember too, I always was taught do not order above this amount. Like you look at the meals, what sounds good, but don't order the most expensive thing on the menu. I'll never forget the first time my my husband Travis KELLY (30:06) Yeah. Mindy Price (30:20) went to dinner with my mom and dad and he ordered the most expensive thing on the menu. Of course my parents were very nice and I was mortified on the inside. You don't do that. But Travis was raised, you order what you want. We work really hard for our money. And not to say they're wealthy or anything, but like we work really hard. If we take you out to eat, you get what you want. My dad was like, that dude's paying for himself next. But But an appetizer and dessert when we were younger you just You had to choose one or the other, or you just got the main entree. Like you didn't get all of that. So if you went to dinner with a family and they invited you and they're like, get whatever you want, that was some of the most awkward situations for me because I was like, but that's that's not what I'm supposed to do. I don't I don't know how to do that. KELLY (31:03) Get whatever you want as long Natalie (31:04) So just KELLY (31:05) as it's under this amount. But yeah, 'cause how many times I can't remember we've got cookies at home. We've got ice cream at home. We've got dessert at home. You don't need to get dessert. okay. Yeah. Natalie (31:14) So that was one of the things Justin Ray said. He's like Olive Garden. Like all going and I don't know why Olive Garden resonates with people. Like even on TikTok when I was scrolling Mindy Price (31:23) It resonates with me. When I went to Olive Garden, I thought we were wealthy. I was like, Olive Garden is the thing. And then when the bachelor or bachelorette, whatever program it was, people made fun of her for liking Olive Garden, I was a little embarrassed. I was like, Well, I thought Olive Garden was fancy. Like I didn't know. KELLY (31:37) Ha ha Natalie (31:39) I've got a few more and then I and then I gotta wrap. So vignette cake is what Zach Zyback said on the podcast or on the podcast on my Facebook Vignetta cake. Did you it took me a minute? Do you guys remember that cake? Vignetta cake. It is that layered, that thin layered vanilla chocolate, like crisp, vanilla chocolate crisp, and it came in the log looking. And I was like, is that the layered small loaf size? He goes, yep. Mindy Price (31:53) No. KELLY (32:01) yeah. Natalie (32:08) And I guess that's because that's what he you know, it's a fancy cake for fancy times.
