Is Texas Overrated? A Brutally Honest Look at the Lone Star State
Sugar, Spice & Spirits Podcast · Episode 46 · Natalie Pilkinton, Mindy Price & Kelly Williams · 31 min
The hosts get brutally honest about Texas.
Natalie Pilkinton (00:00)
From Buc-ees's, the Beaver Colt status to H-E-B, things are bigger and greater in Texas. And that's what we're gonna cover on today's episode. So y'all come along right along with us. So welcome back to Sugar, Spice and Spirits where the drinks are strong and the opinions are even stronger. We're here to discuss Texas culture, Texas, just Texas in general. We love Texas, hope you do too. And if you don't, maybe you'll fall in love with us after today's episode. I'm Natalie Pilkington. I got my co-host, Mindy Price and Kelly
Williams, Kelly Williams almost, almost was up there. But if you've ever argued over the best barbecue, measured distance in hours instead of miles and treated water burger like it's a personality trait, this episode is for you. So grab your cocktail, y'all let's do this. Today, I am sipping my favorite tequila for the sip of the day, uno mas or uno one, uno por favor.
Kelly Williams (00:31)
I'm all in.
Natalie Pilkinton (00:55)
Whatever it is, I love it. have lots of these at the house. I know, Mindy, you've got something special. What are you sipping for this sip of the day?
Mindy Price (01:02)
Well, I am sipping what you gave me for my big milestone birthday. And so also a tequila that I have actually tried over the weekend whenever we were together. So it's El Tesoro. It's, I mean, it's not half empty. There's only a quarter of it gone. Come on now. So, so yeah, it's a Reposado and it's really smooth. I actually really like it. So I've got it here. I'll wait for our cheers.
Natalie Pilkinton (01:13)
That's a half-price bottle, it's half empty.
Kelly Williams (01:30)
And I had a late night last night, so I'm still doing my coffee this morning, and what I put into it is a Patron Tequila Liqueur, which is, you can actually taste the tequila flavor, but it's very mild and it's creamy.
and I couldn't find it for a very long time. The first time I had it was at one of our great places, Saltgrass. It was for an after dinner drink and I thought, why not, let's do the start the day drink too. So, but yeah, it's really, really good. It comes in a little bottle about this big. You usually, if you go to Specs, I have to get it behind the counter. They may have changed it now, but like I said, they stopped it for a while and when I found it, I grabbed like three bottles because I was like, maybe this is just like a little.
promotional thing so I grabbed as many as I could but it is it's a Patron coffee liqueur and it is fabulous.
Mindy Price (02:26)
All right, well, cheers, ladies.
Natalie Pilkinton (02:28)
Cheers. I pretty much heard drink. Sorry, I was excited. Nothing like day drinking at nine in the morning. Let's go.
Kelly Williams (02:29)
Cheers.
Will you be- Yeah.
Yahoo! Yahoo!
Mindy Price (02:38)
Hey, it is Friday and it seems like it's a lot later for me since I didn't get into 1 30 this morning from New Jersey, which that was an amazing trip. By the way, we can talk about it some other time.
Natalie Pilkinton (02:48)
You had a great, I
saw their post. You had it. gave you accolades for your speaking. Congratulations. Great job, Mindy. You always crush it. You always kill it. So.
Mindy Price (02:56)
Thank you. I tell you what, you know, we're talking about Texas today. I was a little nervous going to Jersey. I was speaking in Atlantic City and it was for their state conference for Jersey and it was fantastic. The people were so kind, so much fun, so open to working with me and learning and doing some of the activities that I have them do depending on what the session is. And they were just awesome. And then I got to hang out with them and they had a boardwalk party inside the hotel that we were in. We're in the Bortoga.
Kelly Williams (02:56)
Yeah.
Mindy Price (03:25)
hotel and I was just like, man, I want to come back. Like this was amazing and it was mine and Travis's 24 year anniversary and they found out and y'all, I sent y'all a room, the sweet Holy mother of Pearl. It was amazing. And of course they, you know, sent us some treats and everything and it was just, it was fantastic.
Kelly Williams (03:40)
Yes.
Natalie Pilkinton (03:46)
Kelly and I are gone in a suitcase next time. just gone with you. So if you need a...
Kelly Williams (03:48)
Yeah, right? Yeah, you're gonna
overpack next time for sure. But you look fabulous considering you didn't get into 130, so two doses of that.
Natalie Pilkinton (03:57)
Yeah, she's glowing.
So anybody in New Jersey, Mindy wants to go back, so sign her up for speaking. She'll fly out there. So this episode came about because I'm a realtor, I do real estate, and I've been helping a lot of people move to the city, move to Houston and move to Texas, and they're moving from out of state. So how do I help add value to them? And one of the things that one of the guys moved from New Jersey, he brought his wife over as fiance, and they were
not sure, you they moved from the Dominican Republic to New Jersey to here. So it was kind of when we talked, he said, oh my gosh, like you drove from Houston to Brenham because I set him up in Brenham because that's where it was best suited for him. And I was like, yeah, it's 60 miles. He goes, 60 miles. I'm like, yeah, 60 minutes, 60 miles. It's all good. And it's, you know, it's like just 60 minutes. And I was like, not like New York or New Jersey where, you know, 45 minutes you're going 510 blocks. Like we're actually moving. We're, we're, you know, catching up on some roads. So.
I thought of some ideas to tell it. I'm gonna run through these kinda quick, because I know we have a lot to cover in a little bit of time. So, fast lane. If you guys move to Texas, the fast lane, that is the left-hand lane. That is for fast cars. That is for, you gotta be the fastest one. It's for passing. It's called the passing lane. If you're not passing and people are passing you on the right side, you are the problem. Move over to the right lane.
That is drive with the purpose. That is one of my pet peeves, my soap boxes, drive with the purpose. I will be up on your butt so hard and you'll be like, what is she doing? Does she need something? I can't go. And it's because you're really hampering the process, the progress. I have a lot of ground to cover. I need you to move over so I can go. So I don't know how y'all throw it.
Kelly Williams (05:20)
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, we
tend to be fast drivers in Texas anyway, but just because you're going over the speed limit, even if you're in the left lane, if someone comes up on you, which is probably gonna be me, if you see the white Bronco in your rear view mirror kissing your bumper, move over because yeah, I need to go around you.
Natalie Pilkinton (05:55)
Yeah, we have lots of open roads. The freeways do look like spaghettis. When you get into the city, it's spaghetti land. So it's all that, you know, covered and wrapped stuff. But just know what.
Kelly Williams (06:02)
Okay.
Mindy Price (06:07)
Natalie
with that talking about spaghetti. So we call our feeder roads feeder roads and a lot of people like feeder I don't I think that's a Texas thing too because people hear feeder and they're like, you're taking a Feeder out. Yeah, so we're like no get on the feeder road You take it and if you happen to miss the wrong exit, you might be driving for a little while So patience comes in handy also
Natalie Pilkinton (06:15)
It is. Access. I think they call it access.
Kelly Williams (06:29)
Yes. Yeah.
Natalie Pilkinton (06:31)
Yeah, that's a mirror!
Kelly Williams (06:31)
Be ready to make a loop. Be ready to make a loop. Anytime you're with me. Sometimes I'm driving so fast, I do miss my exit. And sometimes I'm like, yeah, well, if you're with Kelly, you got to make a loop. So just get used to it and it's okay. You'll get there eventually.
Natalie Pilkinton (06:43)
Feeder Road is actually like it runs parallel to the highways and a lot of places don't have that so they're like what is this like why am I on the feeder like it's just easy access like every mile a lot of times you have access on access off.
depending if you're on one of the tolls, because now we have implemented tolls. We have three loops in the great city of Houston. So we have 610, the Beltway, and 99. We're not including Highway 6, 1960, which is around as well, but we have three loops in the city of Houston that we can all travel on. So Houston is very large.
Kelly Williams (07:15)
You
know, and when I first started my career in Houston, I didn't know where I was going. So I thought, well, I'll get on the 610 loop and I'm just gonna make the loop. And I drove the whole loop to see where things were, knowing I was gonna get back where I started. So I wasn't worried about being lost. Once I get back to the medical center, okay, I know I'm home. But I did, I did, because I was, was.
23 years old living on my own in Houston for the first time and it was a little scary. I thought start with a loop, start with a loop and then we'll branch off. Get on those feeder roads and with the feeder roads they feed into, I'm guessing, I don't know, this is my philosophy, the road feeds into the main road. So maybe that's why it's called the feeder road. Like I said, that's my guess and I'm sticking to it.
Natalie Pilkinton (08:02)
So the second thing I want people to know when they move to Texas, there is a great Tex-Mex Mexican restaurant on every corner. And they always serve the best margaritas. Like you'll have a good margarita within like a mile radius of your home, most likely. And they get free chips and salsa. Is that what you were gonna say, Mindy? Traveling.
Mindy Price (08:16)
Yes.
Yes. No, actually
I wanted to go back one time before we move on to chips and salsa and free and margarita and you know try out the happy hours because most of the Mexican restaurants have great ones and just get the house see if you like it if you don't go to the next place. so we you were talking about this a while ago Natalie on travel.
And it is so different. And you said 60 miles is nothing, but we don't typically talk in terms of miles. If something's 12 miles away, but we know it takes 45 minutes, we're like, it's a 45 minute drive. We speak in minutes. And then we also play this game with Waze or with Apple Maps or whatever you use. It's like, really? You say it's gonna take me an hour and 10 minutes to get there? I got you. And you watch the timer go down and you're like, yeah. And that's why when you're in the passing lane and you shouldn't be, you need to move over because we are also playing games.
Natalie Pilkinton (09:02)
We'll be right
Mindy Price (09:08)
you
Natalie Pilkinton (09:09)
Brian
and I were looking, coming back from Sargent last week. We were coming back and Brian pulled it up on his map and I pulled it up on my map and his map showed like five minutes slower and I'm like, where's it taking you? What way? It was just he drives slower. So it took him a different way versus the way I go. I was like, oh, I'm sorry. I was like, it was just me.
Kelly Williams (09:09)
Thank
Mindy Price (09:24)
Yeah.
Kelly Williams (09:29)
It's like, excuse me, who's driving? Is this Brian or Natalie? Okay, Natalie, here, you go this way. You're gonna get there 20 minutes early. Brian, you're gonna, Brian's in mosey mode. Natalie, she's in scamper mode.
that's funny. Yeah, you're right.
Mindy Price (09:43)
Yeah, I just, mean,
that is one thing people have to get used to. We speak in terms of distance, in terms of time. Like that is just, that's what we do. So.
Kelly Williams (09:53)
Well, you
have to calculate that and you have to know and you always have to give yourself extra time because sadly, we do have a horrific traffic problem here. But when you live in this area, it's like, you you put your shirt on, you put your pants on, you put your shoes on, you drive in traffic. It's just something that goes along with being here in Houston. And you have to plan for it because you never know when it says 15 minutes, all of a sudden Waze pops up and says, guess what?
We're gonna add another 10 minutes because there's something going on up ahead of you. So you always have to plan for the unforeseen. Yeah.
Mindy Price (10:26)
And that's, yes,
and I mean, it's like that in Dallas. When I lived in Dallas, the traffic and what was it last month? We were up there because so many speaking things like three or four times and just the traffic is bad there. And then my son lives in New Braunfels and is in the San Antonio area all the time. Traffic is bad there. I mean, in Texas in general, in these big cities, there's just a lot of traffic.
Natalie Pilkinton (10:48)
Well, it's only bad during work hour, like most of the time. When Europeans come to Texas, they don't realize if they're going to drive from Houston to Dallas or Houston to San Antonio in the big triangle, the trifecta there, that in that they're driving across what would be multiple countries in Europe. They don't realize how big Texas is. And in my international travels, I realize
They think that Texans are stupid or Americans are stupid because we're so big and we only speak one language most of us, but bilingual, know, Spanish is coming in, which is fantastic. However, we don't have a need. We don't have all these countries next to us that are speaking Portugal or that are speaking German or French. So we're really only immersed with Spanish and English and maybe up on the North side, know, some French and English, but it's not.
It's not like in the European countries where you drive two hours and you're in different countries. We are in the country of Texas when we drive in Texas. From tip to tip, we can drive for 13 hours, 18 hours sometimes and still be in Texas. It's just massive, north,
Kelly Williams (12:02)
You took, yes, that's exactly what I was, yeah,
you took the words out of my mouth. I was gonna say, you cross from Louisiana on I-10 down by, not Beaumont, but Sabine, cross Sabine River, and you, look, the first, one of first signs you see is El Paso, 400 and something or 500 and something miles, and you're like, holy cow, and that's almost from a diagonal tip to tip, and you're right, you're right, you have to be prepared, you have to map out those Buc-ee's stores, because they're everywhere now.
and you do, and my husband, is such a Buc-ees fanatic, will go somewhere, he will drive 20 miles out of the way just to stop at Buc-ees's, but it's, anyway, it's gotten so crazy busy because there's such an icon now, but yeah, you're right.
Natalie Pilkinton (12:41)
So
anything else on Mexican restaurants, just that they're on every corner, they're great, fantastic, free choice.
Mindy Price (12:49)
Well, we're so spoiled.
You go somewhere and you're at a Mexican restaurant and they charge you for chips and salsa, which most often aren't as amazing. It's just like, my gosh, you know? And we're used to having free chips and salsa. It's just part of it. Now, if the queso is not good though, you leave. Like queso, our cheese dip, my gosh. Like that is a staple for a good Mexican restaurant. And everybody says, y'all are mostly Tex-Mex. Okay, whatever, it's still really good.
Kelly Williams (13:16)
It is really good. the thing is, it's so funny, I will never forget, I went into a restaurant one time and on the menu, it says chili con queso. So if you're not from here, you're not quite sure what you're getting. So I literally walked into a restaurant, it was years ago, and a couple were sitting there and this lady had a bowl of queso dip in front of her with a spoon because she thought it was chili. And I said,
And I asked the waiter, I was laughing so hard and I felt so terrible. I asked the waiter, said, did you think to tell her that she's eating cheese? Like her arteries are hardening as we speak. And he goes, no, I'm like, you need to tell her that that's just dip. And she was, and she had that look on her face like, what am I doing? And poor thing, I don't know if he finally told her or not, but I was horrified. It was horrifying. I was just like, my God, I feel so sorry for her.
Yeah, you just have to kind of like, my goodness. If you don't know, ask.
Natalie Pilkinton (14:20)
These two go hand in hand. Mosquitoes are not our state insect. think we can all agree on that. Humidity, you're in a sauna. You're in a sauna, but everything is air conditioning. Texas weather, y'all.
Kelly Williams (14:31)
Yep.
Mindy Price (14:32)
Yeah,
I mean, our weather is so unpredictable. I can remember literally when I was so young, I have this vivid memory of the first house my mom and dad had, and it was literally raining in the front yard and not in the back. And that's kind of like our weather. It can be one temperature here and just wait five minutes. You could go through four different seasons. Like we have very interesting weather, but the humidity.
my gosh, and there's a saying, you cause it's also so hot here. Have y'all heard, you can fry an egg on a sidewalk. y'all remember that? I can remember moving from Houston to Dallas and Dallas is just so heat hot. They do get some humidity, not as bad as we get in Houston. And I tried it and sure enough, it was over a hundred degrees. And I'm like, I just fried an egg on a sidewalk. Like that does happen.
Kelly Williams (15:04)
Mm-hmm. Yes.
Yeah, one of my favorite pictures I ever took, I was sitting in my car and it was beautiful and sunny up in front of me. And I looked at my rear view mirror and it was pitch black, lightning and raining. And so I took a picture of the sun in the front and you could see in my side mirror, the back, and I actually posted on social media. said, only in Texas do you get this? And it was, it looked like you were looking at two totally different pictures because it was, I came from
cold, blowing windy down to the coast and it was like blustery and for those of you that aren't watching, I did curl my hair this morning and the minute I walked out and walked out over to my office, it was like, so yeah, humidity is dreadful. If you want good, pretty hair, know, get a wig. Yeah, Natalie's smart, Mindy's got beautiful long hair.
I tried to curl mine, Natalie's smart and pulled hers back into ponytails, so it's just, yeah.
Natalie Pilkinton (16:20)
We all got
our cowboy hats on because I know some of you guys are listening. We have our cowboy hats on. I went to the hat bar at the rodeo for mine. That's story for another day. But this hat's cheap, but the hat bar wasn't. So we'll go into that.
Mindy Price (16:33)
This one isn't.
It's from Heads or Tails. You can look it up. It's one of their custom hats. I tried to get one for each cardio.
Natalie Pilkinton (16:37)
It's beautiful, I love your hat.
Kelly Williams (16:38)
Yeah, it's beautiful.
And Natalie, love the feather. You know, it's funny, when I was younger, I had the cowboy hat that had the big feather, like you saw in Urban Cowboy, all the feathers that hang out, and I love it. And then that style went out, but some of the feathers are coming back. I have a scarf band around my hat, and it kind of hangs off in the back a little bit, so a little frou-frou. But I love the feathers that are coming back, and I love the, if you can't see, love the leather tooling and stuff on Mindy's hat. Mindy's hat is,
Mindy's hat is up there. It's pretty. It's very pretty. Yes. Everybody's got their turquoise on and so.
Natalie Pilkinton (17:11)
Very classy. Hers is glassy. This
is my necklace I got in India. So the Buddhist monks in India made it. I'm always excited to wear this piece, because it's a fine piece of jewelry, if I do say so myself.
Kelly Williams (17:19)
That's beautiful.
That is beautiful. I got mine on Harwin.
Natalie Pilkinton (17:32)
Um, but Harwins are a shopping center, if you don't know.
Mindy Price (17:35)
I
think I might have gotten that there too also Kelly this piece
Kelly Williams (17:39)
Yeah, that's
and again, that's a whole nother episode in itself,
Natalie Pilkinton (17:43)
That is another episode. Okay, let's
see. The stars are bright, big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas. Yeah, so if you start singing that song, everybody starts singing wherever you're at, like that song is known. So the deep in the heart of Texas, we're talking Texas things now.
Natalie Pilkinton (18:01)
you know one thing that's very Texas is floating the river. We have many, many rivers to float from, but it does matter where you get dropped off with, who you're using. When we say dropped off, you're getting in with a big tube in your swimsuit, you're carrying your cooler and you're getting on that bus that's taking you and dropping you off. It is logistic fun if you're going with a big group, but it matters where you get dropped off and what river you're floating. So you guys like to the river?
Mindy Price (18:24)
Absolutely. I think it's like a pastime. Like that's what we did. That was our entertainment when we were younger. Like you were going to go to the Guadalupe and a lot of people also go to the Frio, which speaking of Frio, freezing water in the Guadalupe and the Frio and most of the rivers that we float. And so trying to get acclimated to that water. It's nice that it's hot outside when you're in there because the water is freezing.
Kelly Williams (18:49)
Yes, and like Natalie said, depends on where you get dropped off because you have to also consider how much the river's flowing because sometimes you can get dropped off way, way north where the river's flowing south and it may be hours before you get back to your destination. So the biggest advice I have is your high knees in the water, you've got your dedicated ice chest cooler floating right beside you so you're staying hydrated.
and you can splash yourself with water, but what you don't realize is you're also in the sun. So you've got to, especially down here in Texas, you've got to lather up with some good sunscreen because it is by far one of the worst sunburns I have ever had. And of course I look like a big reverse raccoon because I had my big fashion sunglasses on, so I look like, anyway. yeah, sunscreen, sunscreen, even on a daily basis, even if you're not out on the river, sunscreen is essential here for good.
for good skin care because the sun is always, always gonna be beaming down on you. yeah. Yes, because you don't realize the rays are getting through. So, okay. That was our medical moment. cheers to a good health. see, doctor.
Mindy Price (19:50)
Even in the clouds, those are some of the worst sunburns.
Natalie Pilkinton (19:58)
you
Mindy Price (19:58)
Cheers! Cheers to that!
Natalie Pilkinton (20:05)
High school football. So I lived in West Texas, El Paso for one of my stints of my many, many different schools, 13 different schools. I lived in El Paso, went to El Paso urban for a little and the guy that I was dating, he played football. And let me tell you Midland Odessa pulled in, Midland did, with their three charter buses that were to the nines, beautiful, amazing charter buses. And then boys get off that bus with their life. They had their gear on, their pads, they traveled.
Kelly Williams (20:07)
I'm a
Natalie Pilkinton (20:34)
all that way in their pads or they stop somewhere and put them on. But they get out and they're like holding their helmets and they're walking like they're animals. They're coming to tear our little team up. you know, like high school football, that Friday Night Lights, there is a reason Texas players show up and they're drafted every year because you don't mess around with Friday Night Football. That includes the band, that includes the dance, that includes the drill, that includes the whole experience of Friday Night Football.
Mindy Price (20:48)
thing.
Kelly Williams (20:50)
It's a call.
Yes.
Mindy Price (21:05)
Yeah, we don't have
kids in high school anymore. Our oldest one graduated last year. And guess what I'm looking forward to? Next football season. Going back Friday nights. That's where you're at. Even though you don't have kids, like the town still shows up for football. Yeah.
Natalie Pilkinton (21:18)
Season tickets, you have your own seats.
Kelly Williams (21:19)
Yeah.
Natalie Pilkinton (21:21)
Like you have, and the stadiums that they're building, all the taxpayer money, don't get me started on that. That's a whole other topic. But these stadiums that they're building, like they are absolutely insane. Like they just had a football game at a college, I mean a high school football stadium. Like, what? Why? Why? Why? Why? But anyway, it is so much fun. So if we're gonna talk football and we're talking Texas, you know what else we gotta talk about ladies?
Kelly Williams (21:30)
Thanks
Mindy Price (21:32)
Yes.
Natalie Pilkinton (21:50)
High school moms like we...
Kelly Williams (21:50)
What's that?
Yeah, go big or go home.
Natalie Pilkinton (21:55)
People don't know what mums are. This is Marley's.
So this is a mum. This is a big, big flower. It's a mum flower and you put teddy bears. This is her. Look how big. She's tiny. She's a size zero and I am a little bit larger than that. This covers my whole chest. This was her sophomore. So let's go. I'm showing, I'm taking y'all on a real Texas experience here.
This is only a partial because if you were in the small towns, you'd have the overalls that you'd wear and you'd have all the different bling blings that you'd put on. So this is her junior mom, which was...
about the same size as her sophomore mom. And boys, don't worry, you're not left out. We put you on a garter that has a mom on it and streamers and bells and all that as well with your girl's name on it. Marley's man's name's on here too, so she's got that. And then when you get to be a senior, you get to show all the way out. So.
They have senior moms, we used to put these on the clothes, but you can't put them on the clothes no more. So we put them on neck wraps and then they do shoulder stashes. This is small. Her lights aren't turned on right now on it. But these girls walk in with whole big boxes of mums and flowers and decorated. It's like all hats in. Who's got the biggest hat? Because they showing out, y'all. This is.
white for seniors so nobody gets her confused with them lower class men. So that's just a little bit of Texas sass and Texas style when we show up for homecoming. So y'all got any traditions that y'all did at y'all school? in that little small town y'all from. I know y'all pull out.
Mindy Price (23:37)
So I literally, maybe just a few years ago, got rid of my high school moms. They were not that big because when we were going to school, I mean, I remember having a really big one, but they have just gotten so ridiculously obnoxiously large. know, they say everything's bigger and better in Texas. And I think that is the one I'm like, but why? Why does it need to be so big?
Natalie Pilkinton (24:00)
It's insane how much they cost $500 for
a mom. That's not including the dress for the homecoming dance and all the other hoopla. Like, moms are expensive.
Mindy Price (24:10)
They're so expensive. then I don't think this is a Texas thing. And I don't really know. You all can weigh in on this. But the asking, like, will you go to Homecoming with me? Like like, proposals, Homecoming proposals. It's like, my gosh, these guys and just everybody else, what you have to deal with to get engaged. Like what they do is like what we used to do when we were younger in a formal engagement that was all planned and all these things like.
Natalie Pilkinton (24:17)
Let us know.
promposals!
Mindy Price (24:39)
The pressure, y'all, the pressure that these kids are under for asking somebody to go to Hoco, Homecoming, or to prom, and wow. Just wow.
Kelly Williams (24:48)
Yeah.
Natalie Pilkinton (24:49)
Yeah.
Kelly Williams (24:49)
Yeah. Yeah. You have the parents involved. mean, I literally drove by not too long ago and there was something on like one of the Sonic signs or one of the big marquees. So and so, will you go to homecoming with me? And I thought, good God. I mean, you know, I was a cheerleader in high school and if we always ended up going late because we always had to stay late for the games and stuff and nine times out of 10, we'd go with one of the football players who also ended up late. So it'd be like, you want to go to homecoming? Yeah. All right. See you after the game. like, okay, thank you.
Natalie Pilkinton (25:17)
Yeah, we don't do it on the same night anymore. Those are separate nights now.
Kelly Williams (25:18)
You know, it's like...
Yes, yeah, but we used to do it on the same night. We do it on the same night, so not with that.
Mindy Price (25:24)
Yeah, but it's such a big deal. And remember,
like back in the day, homecoming, you probably would carpool and people would follow each other. no, it's like prom. You're renting limousines, you're having stuff catered, like it is huge. And I will say too, because it has gotten so big, you know, there are some kiddos that miss out because they're just not in that financial situation. And so I do think...
some of this stuff has gotten a little ridiculous. It's like, okay, let's just, can we peel it back just a little bit? Can we be okay with that and easier said than done? But man, some of this stuff is a little ridiculous in my opinion.
Natalie Pilkinton (26:05)
think there's always that person that takes it to the extreme and that's the one that'll make the news and all that hoopla. But if you just moved to Texas and your child's getting asked to ho-ho or like just know that the guy's typically by the mums for the girls. So it is a thing and if your son is asking...
Kelly Williams (26:05)
It is a little over the top.
Natalie Pilkinton (26:26)
a Texas gal to Hoco, you need to understand what that means in that sense and come to an understanding. Parents come together to like Mason has gone to Hoco, my oldest has gone to Hoco with a lot of, one time I think there's a picture of him when he had six girls and it was just him. And he was friends with all of them, but he brought them all like some flowers and was just.
Cordial, when they were at dinner, like they went to the restroom, he's the only one at the table, know, when your date goes to the table, like kind of stuff. But just be prepared, it really is fun, it's a good time, it's for, you know, parents get together and they get to meet. But it's a Texas thing for both shows, so, wearing your overalls, I mean, like, these small towns, I know in Splendor they bling it up, my cousin is so talented, she does so much with all that, and I'm just, I don't have the bandwidth, I'm a boy mom, you know.
Marlee's stuck with me, bless her heart, and she's a girly girl, so get yourself a good girl mom in there and they will bling it up and help you too, so anyway.
Mindy Price (27:27)
They'll help you. And then there's a lot of people that also understand instead of buying the big mum from someone else, there's individuals who will make them. And there's, you can go online on TikTok and you can look at social media and you can figure out also how to make a very beautiful mum yourself. Does it take a little more time? Yes. But do you sell yourself hundreds of dollars too? So there's definitely ways to do it, but it is. And then you said the guys typically buy the girls, the mums, but the girls are buying the guys corsages. And here's what's so crazy. The corsages we used to buy, you you think of like,
just a little flower or whatever. no, now the corsages and the arm things, whatever they're called, for the garters, for the guys, literally are sometimes the size of what our moms used to be when we were in school. They're just huge on the side of the arm, but you know, it's just, it's different.
Kelly Williams (27:57)
I'll be here.
Natalie Pilkinton (28:10)
It's fun. You know, we
don't have enough time to cover everything we didn't cover. Like there's so many things from music to cities to Texas sayings to Texas, like getting into it. So we'll definitely have to continue this episode. What is something that you guys like as far as Texas? When you think of Texas, I know when I lived in California, everybody asks, where's my, where's my longhorn? Where's my horse? Did I ride my horse? And I'd always be a smart ass. Yeah, I rode my horse to school. What else? You know, like.
You know, yes, my dad drives the truck with the big long horns on it. What do you think? So just, you know, we have a lot of fun with it. We enjoy it. We love Texas.
