From brass balls to barn doors, the hosts decode the Southern phrases that make you sound like you stepped out of a Mark Twain novel.

Speaker 2 (00:36) From brass balls to barn doors, we're decoding the phrases that make Southerners sound like, we just stepped out of a Mark Twain novel and straight into a honky tonk. So we are Sugar Spice and Spirits podcast. I am Natalie Pilkington, along with my beautiful co-host. Speaker 1 (00:54) Mindy Price. Speaker 3 (00:54) and Kelly Williams. Speaker 2 (00:56) So we always start with a sip of the day and we have a lovely drink brought to us from Ron Tarr, which includes coconut Malibu and a little bit of Dr. Pepper. We appreciate you, Ron, for sending us this dirty Dr. Pepper. It was actually, Dr. Pepper was invented out of Waco, Texas at a pharmacy by Charles Alderton at the Morrison Old Corner Drugstore. So I think that's pretty interesting. It was before Coca-Cola, so let's go ahead and take a sip of our dirty Dr. Pepper. Speaker 1 (01:28) Thank you Speaker 3 (01:29) Texas-based Dr. Pepper. Speaker 2 (01:31) Alright and thank you Ron Tarr. Speaker 3 (01:33) Mmm. Ooh, Ron. You have worked your way to the top of our list. That was good. Speaker 1 (01:39) And how it came to us, had, was I in Ireland? Pitching forward, where was I at? Ireland. Ireland, so I was in Ireland. Everybody does their own drinks whenever we're in different spots. And Natalie did a... Speaker 2 (01:54) ATB root beer and coconut rum. Speaker 1 (01:57) And so he messaged us and said, if you think that's good, try this. Speaker 2 (02:00) Wait till you try the dirty Dr. Pepper. So we like it a little dirty. I like it a little dirty. So we went to the dirty Dr. Pepper. Speaker 1 (02:07) And we're just saying thank you, Ron, for sending this to us because it is actually very delicious and we were a little nervous. We're like, okay, how's it gonna be? It's really, really good. And so if you have an idea for a sip of the day, you can send it to us because we would love to feature your cocktail because we love new ideas. Speaker 2 (02:26) or your topic of the day. So today's topic is actually like old world sayings or old school idioms, which are usually in the South. know Kelly is full of them. If you've caught any of our, our episodes from grits, what, does grit stand for? And then bitch. Speaker 3 (02:42) raised in the south. Being in total control of herself. Speaker 2 (02:46) Absolutely, think those are fabulous. So Kelly, you're Speaker 3 (02:50) bit a nit-rit. Speaker 2 (02:53) I'm a bitch, right there, it's a new quote. Speaker 1 (02:55) still have some short thoughts. So our very first episode we were like, because we were filming and then literally a cat ran across the table and it was like, you could see the cat's ass. And so one of our girlfriends was like, you've got to be like, you know, the cat's meow, the cat's ass, Mindy, that's an idiom. like, it means like. It's cool, it's super good. So originally we were gonna do the cat's ass as our first episode and then we realized, well in podcast world you're supposed to say what the podcast is about. People wouldn't get it if they don't know your personality so much. So that's the first one I think of whenever I think of this. literally if you go back, you watch it for a little while, the cat walks across the dang table. but he has many cameos that you see. And then we go to Kelly's and we're in different spots. There's just cats running around everywhere. We love dogs too. We all have dogs, but that was so fun. Speaker 2 (03:49) So when we talk about idioms, one of our shorts that did really well was Kelly, your father's shortest pencil. Speaker 3 (03:54) Yes. Yeah, my father has such quick wit and he said something one day, know, worried about when he gets older and he's forgetful. And I said, well, you know, he goes, well, I'll tell you what, the best way to keep from letting that happen is he said the shortest pencil is better than the longest memory. And I went, well, you're right. And I mean, he just said it so quick. I mean, it's like, it doesn't matter if it's like just that little bit, but he's right. I mean, there's a lot of logic to that, but that has stuck with me. I mean, he told me that 20 years ago. Speaker 2 (04:26) down and we actually filmed a short like we made a short of that clip and it did really well because I there's truth in these idioms right like there's a hint of logic behind it it's not just something that's Speaker 3 (04:39) little snarky, but it's based on a true situation and it could be, yeah, something that's out of your control or whatever, but they're fun. Speaker 2 (04:47) So what's funny is like on this this episode breakdown one of the idi idioms is you're about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. My personal favorite is cornbread ain't done in the middle. His cornbread ain't done in the middle. What's your favorite ridiculous family saying I think there's so many. Speaker 3 (04:56) my gosh, I like that. Speaker 2 (05:11) I'd love to hear because our grandparents are full of such quick wit. Yeah. And that tongue is just like boom there. Speaker 1 (05:18) You know that one that everybody hears, it's like, don't cry over spilled milk. Unless it's a white Russian. Speaker 3 (05:25) That was fun. Speaker 2 (05:28) Let's call the alcohol police or don't put the cart before the horse y'all This is basically saying don't cash the check before you've earned it. I think that is so many times especially in real estate my gosh as a realtor as a real estate investor you go to close you think it's coming close and that title is not clear because there's a clouded title somebody won't sign the paperwork there's airship issues you're like My goodness Speaker 3 (05:55) So do you have any favorites that you tend to go to? Speaker 2 (06:01) Not the sharpest tool in the toolbox, you know, like that one. That one's good. Speaker 3 (06:06) I've got two favorites and for whatever mine is your nugget Shy of a happy meal. And the other one, and honestly, I don't even know really what it pertains to. And it came from one of my good friends from Louisiana, Anne Westmoreland. Thank you so much. I'm sorry. It's got profanity and it's excuse me first, but it is shit in my hat. Yes. Speaker 1 (06:29) She talks. Speaker 3 (06:31) I was sitting there one day and it's kind one those things where someone says something like, shit in my hat. And someone looked at me and like, what? And I'm like, yeah. And so the first time when texting got so popular and I saw the SMH shaking my head, that was pretty original. And I realized, okay, that's not, it was shaking my head. But I mean, Speaker 1 (06:59) Years ago, Kelly and I became friends and she would go, shit in my hat! What does that even mean? Speaker 2 (07:06) Who wants shit in their hat Speaker 3 (07:09) couldn't tell her. I'm like, I don't know, my one of my best friends in Louisiana and said it one time and I said, it just stuck. And so yeah, so that's what those Speaker 2 (07:18) So what does shit in the hat mean? Explain it. Speaker 3 (07:20) It's basically an hell or an crap moment or someone says something and or something bad happens or I mean it can it has multiple areas of coverage I mean you can use it for whatever you want, but that's typically when I use it if someone says something like shit my hat or something doesn't go your way so Speaker 2 (07:39) just thought it meant like there's crap to like there's that's worth worthless like that's Speaker 3 (07:44) Yeah, it's it's worthless logic. It's you make no sense. mean, I think Speaker 1 (07:47) She says it when something happens and she stubs her toe or doesn't like what happens she goes well shit in my hat and it took me a back for a while so she first Speaker 2 (07:57) We talk about acronyms. So my mother-in-law, my ex-mother-in-law used to think LOL was like the Lord's prayer or something. So somebody would be like, my friend just died. And she'd be like, LOL. I had to tell her like, no, no, that does not mean, what do you, like, first off, what do you think it means? And she was like, Lord's of. Something I forget what she thought it was but it's like that does not mean Whatever you think it means it means like laughing out loud So, please don't say that anymore and she felt like she was just like, she had no idea Speaker 3 (08:33) What about on texting? When everyone does this for the praying hands, and in reality it's high five. So if you look it up, it says it's a high five. So when someone says, I'm so sorry for your loss, high five. Speaker 2 (08:46) I rebuke that it's praying him. Speaker 3 (08:48) Now, I think the majority, I think it was meant to be a high five or something, but the majority of everyone uses it as praying hands. So continue using it as praying hands, because that's what I'm using for you. Not that I'm the authority, but I think the whole world would basically say, 99 % of us say praying hands. Speaker 2 (09:03) So, and I guess that also depends on where you're from too. Like, so kick the bucket, obviously, old-timey death slang, like, they kicked the bucket because you can't say passed away. it's like raining cats and dog. Not sure where that one came from, but if it ever literally happens, I am moving. I'm getting the heck out of Dodge. We are in a Truman show, so we'll see. Speaker 1 (09:25) So a couple of mine that I like are, don't bite off more than you can chew. Like you think about what that actually means is like, cause they would say it, hey, don't bite off more than you can chew. Like don't overcommit. yeah, when you think about it. Speaker 3 (09:36) Don't overload yourself. Speaker 2 (09:39) eat an elephant one bite at a time? Like how do you eat an elephant? Like who is eating an elephant? One bite at an elephant? an element. elephant. I'm sorry. Let me take a sip. But if I'm gonna eat an elephant, I'm gonna take it one bite. Speaker 1 (09:44) Look at that. Speaker 3 (09:46) I'm not. Speaker 1 (09:58) Okay, and then put your money where your mouth is. Like that one, think, I was like, all right, put your money where your mouth is. You believe in it. So let's see where it is. Is that something you believe in? So some of these old school sayings that you used to hear, like, let the cat out of the bag. Oh, you weren't supposed to do that. You're that person that. You don't tell them. Because they're gonna let the cat out of the bag. What that mean? Speaker 3 (10:15) You Speaker 2 (10:26) Watch pot never boils. Speaker 3 (10:28) What goes around comes around. Karma. Karma comes around that big mouth open ready to just bite you in the rear end. Yeah, that's a big one. Speaker 2 (10:30) Really? Yeah Speaker 1 (10:37) about burning at both ends. we all can understand that. Speaker 3 (10:39) Yeah. Speaker 2 (10:41) When you talk about that, remember a young lady, and I say young lady, was an African American woman, middle age, probably our age, younger, and she made a post. She's like, Tasha's tired. And that was her last post, but she was like working two or three jobs and she passed away in her sleep. So that reminds me, I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but that's what that makes me think. Like, because we all work so hard, especially as entrepreneurs, we're burning the candle at both ends. My heart goes out to her family, but just like her last post to everybody in life and society was, she's tired. And she went to sleep and didn't wake up. Speaker 1 (11:18) That's so sad. think about, so on, cause we don't want to just go all sad cause what, like that's terrible. But you think about this, another one I wanted to bring up, all in a day's work. All in a day's Speaker 2 (11:30) Yeah, all in a day. Speaker 3 (11:32) Yep. Speaker 2 (11:33) The squeaky will gets the grease. Karen gets that refund. But I I don't think it's just Karen gets that refund. I think in life people get busy. And even as a realtor, like when I have a client that's going for a property and I'm getting ignored. yeah, I'm to be up in your DMs. Hey, where are we? I'm going to be calling that squeaky will. Don't forget about me. I'm still here. We're still interested. How can how can we get this property? And birds of a feather flock together with. Speaker 3 (11:55) Yeah. Speaker 1 (11:58) Another day? Speaker 2 (12:08) are we in? You'll never know. Speaker 3 (12:09) That was a little bit a tongue twister. I got you on that one, so that was good. Speaker 1 (12:15) my gosh. here's what's so funny. So we do have some notes on some of them, because we all have our own things that we do. So it says, when you talk about friendships and life lessons, birds of a feather flock together. Cue stories about your dynamic trio. Speaker 2 (12:35) Superpowers unite! gotta do it all together. One, two, three. Okay, boom. Speaker 1 (12:42) Alright, when pigs fly. Speaker 2 (12:44) God. We didn't share a story about our dynamic duo. Speaker 1 (12:48) Trio. That's why. Speaker 3 (12:51) So if ignorance is bliss, some people are downright ecstatic. Speaker 2 (12:58) Amen to that, let's go, I wish, I wish. Not my first rodeo right? Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo let's go. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Speaker 3 (13:01) No Yeah. Speaker 1 (13:10) Actions speak louder than words. Speaker 2 (13:12) Okay. Speaker 3 (13:12) So I like the snarky ones. I like the ones that like, I'm not arguing, I'm just explaining why you're wrong. Speaker 2 (13:15) them. Speaker 1 (13:21) Okay, so the early bird gets the worm. Second one gets to sleep in. Speaker 3 (13:25) Nah, I'll take coffee. Hey, the early bird can have the worm, I'm gonna take the coffee. I'm good. Yeah. Speaker 2 (13:32) Bury the hatchet because sometimes the peace is more powerful than pride However, where are we burying the hatchet? mean, no, he could be buried somewhere else Speaker 3 (13:41) So here's like one of my favorite, I threw this at Mindy earlier and she just died laughing. So if at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you. Speaker 2 (13:56) Wait a minute. morbid. Yeah, you're dead. Speaker 3 (14:03) If it usually takes you two or three times to succeed, would not let skydiving be your first. Speaker 2 (14:09) Unless you're like Ryan was a Ryan on a 104 K RBE the Houston radio station. Yeah, she didn't open He actually splat he but he had a lot like he lived he survived you Speaker 3 (14:21) I used to listen to him. Is he like, he like, roadkill now? Speaker 2 (14:25) Yeah, he had a lot of broken bones and stuff. He actually made it so I Was a couple years ago. Oh, okay Speaker 3 (14:29) When was that? sweet lord. Sorry about that, Ryan. I totally did not mean to talk some smack about it. Speaker 1 (14:40) We're in Houston. Speaker 2 (14:43) Yeah, we could have you on the show. Maybe. Our standards are really. Speaker 1 (14:45) Maybe. Actions speak louder than words. Like that's another one. That's so you think of different ones. Like what did you hear when you were growing up? Actions speak louder than words. Speaker 2 (15:02) But that's true. I in business and life and everything if you're not if you're giving me lip service over here, but your actions aren't matching peace like Speaker 3 (15:11) You can talk the talk, but you better walk the walk. Speaker 1 (15:14) Or, okay, let's bring it in because, I'm. Speaker 2 (15:17) 10 gallon hat, all hat, no cattle. Speaker 1 (15:19) Yes. But actions speak louder than words and some of those things. So you think about AI has taken over so much. You can read this stuff, but where's the human in it? Like if we were just like, we are reading, we're having so much fun with these, but without our personality, if we're just like, blah, blah. And you think about that AI has taken over so much, but there are things that it can't take over as a human. I know I was a Debbie Downer just now. So somebody say something to pick it back up. Speaker 2 (15:47) Which is titty. Speaker 3 (15:48) So what about, this one's geared towards Mindy. You can't please everyone because you're not tequila. Speaker 2 (15:59) So we have colder than colder than a well digger's butt. I've never heard that but colder than witch's turd. Speaker 1 (16:05) I've never heard the witches, I've heard the well diggers butt I have. Speaker 2 (16:08) Okay. Speaker 3 (16:09) You haven't heard the witches' Speaker 1 (16:11) No, I heard them call whatever she said. Speaker 2 (16:13) than a goat's butt in a pepper p- Speaker 1 (16:16) Nope, I haven't heard that one. Speaker 2 (16:17) seen everything. So they're eating peppers hotter than... Okay. Speaker 3 (16:23) So in the South, in the South, if a Southern Belle comes up and tells you how nice, that basically means F you or F off. I didn't say it. Bless your little heart. saw that. Bless your little heart. Yeah, that's something for you. Poor clueless fool. Speaker 1 (16:49) Don't you know what? That one's been used so much. Like literally, like somebody will say, you don't mean it in any way. You're like, bless your heart. Speaker 2 (16:55) But I mean if you're saying Speaker 3 (16:57) It's all about your tone. Bless your heart. Speaker 2 (17:00) If you're saying that, I'm just saying. Don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. Speaker 3 (17:02) Ha ha ha! No! I've heard of that one. Where's one of the things my dad said is better than a in the eye with a sharp stick? So it's like he something bad happening as well. I guess it's see the bright side, you know, I look at the bright side his rendition is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. like, Speaker 2 (17:29) I'm trying to keep it PG-13. Okay. Matter than a wet hen. Full as a tick. let's burn that thing. A scarce as hen teeth. Scarce as hen teeth. I haven't heard that one. Speaker 3 (17:34) Okay. Speaker 1 (17:39) Yes. the balls in your court. Speaker 3 (17:47) You're too much drop Speaker 1 (17:48) accountability decision. Speaker 2 (17:50) You're bringing like real stuff like this like herding cats. Mindy's trying to keep it professional like what? Absolutely. Yeah. Ain't my circus ain't my monkeys. That's favorite. That's mine. Speaker 3 (17:55) Hahaha You made your bed, now lie in it. Speaker 1 (18:06) did it go in that order? Did it go in the order of not my monkey, not my circus? so maybe we made up that order. Speaker 2 (18:11) circus ain't my monkeys Ain't my circus, ain't my monkeys. Ain't my monkeys, ain't my circus. I don't know, one bite at a time. Burning the candles at both ends. Busier than a one-armed pepper, pepper hanger. Paper hanger. How do you get a one-armed Aggie out of a tree? Wave at him. Oh, sorry. Speaker 3 (18:31) You Speaker 1 (18:36) Disapp, D I S APP Speaker 2 (18:38) I don't know we're entrepreneurs so we got lots of stuff so real estate she's got professional speaking business coaching Also the diss app which if you guys are on Apple and you like college sports the diss app Speaker 3 (18:52) It's for you. Speaker 1 (18:54) because they can download it. Speaker 2 (18:56) Yeah, because I'm on Android and I can't yet. Because we need more people on Apple to go download it, because less people have Android. Speaker 1 (19:06) What is it about Android people? Speaker 2 (19:08) people are strong. They really know where they stand and they don't fall to peer pressure. Where are my Android Google people at? That's what I want to know because we are a breed of our own. We don't care what color our bubble is. Speaker 1 (19:23) No, you just make my text messages awkward. Speaker 2 (19:26) No, that Apple makes their text messages awkward because you guys are inferior to the Google Samsung products. I'm sorry, guys. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. That's true. You can't make something fancy out of junk. Lipstick on a pig. You hear that in real estate all the time. Speaker 3 (19:27) Thanks, green. My goodness Speaker 1 (19:51) corporate ladder. It was one. Speaker 2 (19:53) Yes. That's the way the cookie crumbles. That's just how life goes sometimes. Tough luck. Deal with it. Speaker 1 (20:01) back to the drawing board. Speaker 2 (20:02) It's not a dad bod, it's a father figure. Funny way for a guy who says his extra pounds are distinguished, not lazy. I think dad bods are great. Speaker 3 (20:12) Let's not let's not go into the podcast we did once before we're bod... Bods are great but mom bods are... nevermind. It's a double standard it's not fair but different podcasts look it up. Speaker 1 (20:16) Shit, a bite. Speaker 2 (20:22) Okay. There are so where my men at that like the women bods that like the curves that like a little extra there. They're out there They're there watch we'll see we'll see once in a blue moon something happens. So really did you forget it's possible? Speaker 1 (20:39) Don't put all your eggs in one basket. You've heard that before. I have. Speaker 3 (20:45) So he is so- Speaker 1 (20:49) and not watching, she looks at me like I've never heard that. Hello, I think most people have heard, don't put all your eggs in one basket. What does it mean? Like you bet on something, like you think about entrepreneurs and everything, or you're going all in. Yes, diversify. Good job. Speaker 3 (21:01) You diverse. Thank you. one of those things that you've always heard, and the last episode we talked about, my mom, her name, well her nickname is Sassy. And if you've ever known Sassy, she is Sassy. And one of her favorite things was, and I heard it on also on Steel Magnolias, Weezer. Speaker 2 (21:06) or diversification. Speaker 3 (21:36) No, not Weezer, it was Olivia, whatever. If you can't say something nice, it's supposed to say don't say anything at all, but my mom is, if you can't say anything nice, come sit next to me. Speaker 2 (21:53) met her mom yet, but I I'd love to get your mom, have my mom in a room and let's put a camera on it. What's that podcaster we met? Interview your Nana or interview your, I'd like, yeah, that'd be nice. Speaker 3 (21:55) wait That would be, yeah, because my mom, I would be sitting there just like this. my god, my god, my god. Speaker 2 (22:14) She comes with her own disclaimer. So Cat got your tongue. I got your tongue. Speaker 3 (22:16) Yes, yes. Speaker 1 (22:20) Okay, how about you can't pour from an empty cup? So you can go, you gotta fill yours, but why aren't you filling mine? Yeah, I'm halfway there. But if you think about that, you can't pour from an empty cup. I know we're having fun and we're being silly, but I still have to throw it in there. Make sure you're taking care of you. You gotta take care of you, because so often, you're taking care of everybody else. You gotta take care of yourself. Okay, back to the fun. Speaker 2 (22:48) doesn't fall far from the tree. Speaker 3 (22:50) Oh. And it's generational. Speaker 2 (22:56) break those generational curses. Speaker 3 (22:58) Yep, yeah. Better safe than sorry. Not always a bad philosophy to follow, but doesn't always get you outside your comfort zone. Speaker 2 (23:08) Stir the hornet's nest. As a realtor lately, I have been seeing so many hornet's nest or jackets or whatever, the buzzers that want to bite me and eat me. I have just added that to my realtor kit. So when I go show property, have wasps spray because we're down here in the South and those wasps Speaker 1 (23:25) Love us. Speaker 3 (23:27) Yep, yep. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Bye. See ya. Wouldn't want to be ya. Speaker 1 (23:33) So my dad used to always say it was so funny. We're having fun. It's like nine o'clock at night. He's like turn out the light Speaker 3 (23:41) The party's over. Speaker 2 (23:43) That's a song too. are closing time. okay, okay Barking up the wrong tree you're accused of blaming the wrong person or chasing the wrong idea. That's never happened. Never happened I'm going to get my bag slang for making money or securing the deal. I'm gonna go get my bag Speaker 3 (24:01) That's kind of cool. thought, where are going? Speaker 1 (24:02) That one. Speaker 2 (24:08) We're going somewhere, we're getting that band. I'm sorry band, bands, bands of money. Get that bag. Butterflies in my stomach, hey. Speaker 1 (24:10) Alright, Speaker 3 (24:17) Hey, sweet Lou. Speaker 1 (24:19) That's how I feel sometimes going on stage for a new talk that I'm gonna give and it's like Butterflies in the stomach, but I tell you what I do the first time you don't have it is the time that you don't Like stop because if you don't care about your audience and where you're at. Yeah Speaker 3 (24:34) Or then you got, I don't have the energy to pretend to like you today. Speaker 2 (24:39) Is that a, is I think that's true. I don't know. Speaker 3 (24:42) Maybe it's one that's very infrequently said out loud. Speaker 2 (24:46) brass balls or balls are still incredibly bold or fearless. I used to have a boss that would say reach down, grab between your legs, feel is there anything there? If not go to your wife's purse and get them. Speaker 3 (24:59) Shut up. So what is all of our favorites as a parent? Because I said so. Speaker 2 (25:08) Six, seven. They don't understand that. You out there, if you have a little, you understand six, seven. Y'all are so missing out on this six, seven craze. Speaker 3 (25:19) Isn't that this thing? Yeah, it's like, don't know what the hell it is. just see six, seven. don't know it is. Speaker 2 (25:23) But any parent out there now knows 6'7", 6'7". It came from an interview. Somebody goes, how tall are you? He's like, 6'7". And then the way he answered, was 6'6", 6'7". And it was like, so 6'7 is what kids are saying. My kid is in fourth grade and he says 6'7". So when we say that, always say, Brian always says 13. And so you'll see it like you'll start seeing it in posts and stuff. But it's like so-so or... and parents are still trying to figure out what it means. Speaker 3 (25:54) every day. It's a teacher or it's a mom. What is my kid walking in and waving his hand saying six six Speaker 2 (26:00) So just so you know, it's like so-so or as so we always just like some people are saying eight when they say six seven Brian says 13 like six plus seven is 13. So we just have fun with it. So now whenever something's like we like say six six seven. So that's something that's cool. So Speaker 1 (26:18) When I hear six, seven, go, woo! Because that's what I've seen on social media. Speaker 3 (26:23) What? Speaker 2 (26:44) A tough demanding person who doesn't mess around or a ball buster. Speaker 1 (26:49) Are you gonna say it again? She's crying! Speaker 2 (26:58) I'm trying to move. Speaker 3 (27:02) I mean, standing over here. I need some clarification. Speaker 1 (27:02) some understand You haven't seen it? We're everywhere in the classroom at Taco Bell when they call your order and they say 67 and everybody's like, wheeee! Speaker 2 (27:19) Yeah, so if they're not Speaker 3 (27:21) I don't go to Taco Bell very often and I don't go in the classroom so apparently I'm missing out. She said... shit my hat. Speaker 2 (27:27) She's trying to say. Hang Speaker 3 (27:34) Absence makes the heart grow fonder. You can go now. I was kidding. Speaker 2 (27:42) God, okay, sorry Lord. Pump full of lead? That's gangster. Speaker 3 (27:47) Old Vestra's Speaker 2 (27:50) So wise is the now definitely very very smart So southern snarky and old-school sayings you're a deep shit. yeah It's better than shitting the hat I guess Speaker 3 (27:53) That's so great. Oh yeah. Unfortunately I haven't heard that. Not how big the difference. No. Speaker 1 (28:14) because I think shit in my head's like, crap, when you're in deep shit, like you're in. Speaker 2 (28:18) At least you did something to get there. Speaker 3 (28:22) When someone's being ridiculous, you say, butter my butt and call me a biscuit. I've never said that, but. Speaker 2 (28:27) My uncle used to say save the watch because it's getting deep like I have to put my boots on time to deal with some messy things You know what that one reminds me of I to put my boots on have you seen those tiktok Speaker 3 (28:35) my god. Sit and eat. Speaker 2 (28:44) Now, the TikToks where the parents say like, oh, we got to go fight. Like they go in and tell their little kids, we got to go fight those neighbors down the street. And then the kids are like on their iPads. They're like, what? OK, I know some karate moves. They're like getting dressed and put their backpack on and going to fight. Speaker 3 (29:00) That was so funny. Speaker 2 (29:03) Don't let the door, which we covered, okay. A stitch in time saves nine. Fix the problem early before it gets worse. Absolutely, right? Honesty is the best policy. Tell the truth. Speaker 1 (29:14) it truly is, you're not having to cover up anything, you just say, here we are, and this is what we're doing. If you can just go in with that, and you're not hiding anything, that's always, that's always good. Speaker 3 (29:25) Because then you have to remember, what did I lie about? Because then you have to cover your tracks. If you're not honest and don't tell the truth, then have like, damn, what did I just tell them? the shortest pencil's been in the longest memory and you can't remember what you just told somebody. Speaker 2 (29:42) Understand that like I guess I just never was a liar so I never really like yeah what like and when people say honestly like in a conversation Honestly, let me Hey you so you haven't been honest with me before now. Yeah Speaker 1 (29:51) Be honest with you. so hard to, some people that you love in communication and they're just like, it's just so easy and it's like, oh, to tell you the truth or in full transparency or to be honest with you, so you weren't before? You gotta say those things. Speaker 2 (30:06) Like everything else was code. Speaker 3 (30:09) But so and I'll admit I am the person that I use that phrase a lot and it's not that I up until that point I've not been honest It's just you almost want to hit home and you want to say hey, I'm being perfectly candid I'm being 100 % I want you to understand I'm telling you the absolute god-honest truth right here Speaker 1 (30:26) So it makes me think though that you're not. instead it's like, hey, this might hurt. I don't mean it to sting. I'm gonna be totally unfiltered. Like you're asking me for this and you just give it to them because when somebody says this. Speaker 3 (30:40) the eyes with something painful because then have to you know and move on from it. Speaker 1 (30:44) Even when you say it, if somebody says it in conversation, they go, I just kind of rolled my eyes and I was like, I know you don't mean it that way, but people that don't know you, they won't take you as seriously. Speaker 3 (30:53) Well, and that's true. And that's one of the issues that you and I have. We worked at the same company together. We both had to give presentations. And I would say something and you would shake your head. And I was like, for me, from my standpoint, I knew I was telling the truth and telling fact, but... the way you perceived it and perception is huge. You have to be very careful. You have to think of who your audience is. You have to think of what age group your audience is because some of these funny little idioms and everything that you say could mean one thing to one generation and something totally different to the next generation. And we're Gen X's but we're 11 years apart. And so if I say something that is relevant, relevant? Relevant to what I grew up with. And I say it to you because to be honest was something we used a lot. And it didn't mean that we weren't, you know, okay, I've been lying to you the whole time. So I'm gonna finally own up and be honest with you now. That's not what that meant. It was almost like you were just trying to really get their attention and say, hey, you know what, to be honest with you, you suck. You you didn't suck before but we got it you really suck now So it it was almost like to hit home But you're right when you're talking to that different audience the first thing they think of is okay Wow, so I couldn't take you at face value before So even though we joke about a lot of these a lot of these things that they've been around for a long time But it's funny how they have evolved and have had different Meanings to different age groups, you know, I mean, it's just it's you have to be very careful sometimes Speaker 2 (32:26) Don't judge a book by its cover. Speaker 3 (32:29) Ooh, that's good. Speaker 1 (32:31) gonna get off our series because we were having so much fun and people were like, we're done, there was so much more fun with her. But don't judge her by its cover, all those things. And you mentioned it, the different generations and how you see things, like spending some time to understand how. each other communicates and what it means to each other and all these idioms and different things like it does mean something and if you truly care about being a great communicator and understanding the things that meant something to you and how it can be offensive and it people get frustrated like I shouldn't change who I am but you also can't help how somebody else is being raised and so understanding the things that change and there are words that you can use in a different way, sayings that you can say that get your point across and you can still be funny or direct or whatever or extremely truthful that truly mean something. Speaker 3 (33:25) Sorry, something just came to my mind and I'm gonna say it in a second, I'm gonna you finish. I'm sorry, that was rude. I didn't mean to catch you off, interrupt you. Speaker 1 (33:34) And if you're not, let's you're alone. Speaker 3 (33:37) You Speaker 1 (33:38) Listening, I'm sure it's super annoying, but if you're watching you're like my gosh to see their faces but like just all of these things and the point of it for Nat was like there's so many things that we used to say and we used to do and They mean different things now and we laugh about it you think about like I was I was talking to somebody and I was like do you remember what a rotary phone was? What is that? You remember having to press your you know finger in there and do this there are things that we think are so common knowledge and they're not. And because there is a little bit of an age difference between us, that literally she'll say some stuff and we roll our eyes and we laugh about it, but you just don't get it. She'll be like, Mindy, why are you so passionate about this thing? I don't really care. And I'm like, Kelly, I'm so passionate about it because I see other people and I see this younger generation or this and that. And then she's like, and then there's things she tells me and I'm like. Speaker 3 (34:23) Thank Speaker 1 (34:35) Gosh, you're right. Like I get it. Like let me spread that word It's just so this is super fun and you take it back and you like we never some of the past we never want to get lost some of the past we're like, okay, you know, it's like just remembering this stuff So what were you? I know Speaker 3 (34:50) When we were thinking about funny things that we've all just kind of made up ourselves, and it kind of goes back to the whole sassy thing, and speaking your mind. And sometimes one of my favorite things is you overload your butt with your mouth. Speaker 1 (35:05) My dad used to overload your butt with your parakeet mouth. Speaker 3 (35:10) Yes. Speaker 2 (35:11) That makes me think of Pick Your Switch. Speaker 3 (35:15) So my mom has, she thinks she doesn't give two poots about speaking her mind. And she will speak her mind about what someone's wearing or whatever and she almost got my daughter in an argument at Disney World of all things because she made a comment about the girl next to him. Anyway, I digress. So my husband and I, we have one of those sayings. Speaker 1 (35:39) more. I'm kidding. Speaker 3 (35:44) Just because you can doesn't mean you should and that goes back to That goes back to I want to say sometimes do you have a freaking mirror in your house? Because I see and I want to applaud women and girls girls who have so much confidence in themselves That they're not afraid to just put it all out there, but sometimes we don't want to see it all Speaker 2 (35:50) limiting. Speaker 3 (36:13) And so just because you can wear it doesn't mean you should. So when you're however old you are and your bra is this big and your boobs are this big, you don't wear it out in public. It's just inappropriate. I don't mean to go off on some little tangent things, but that's something that... Speaker 2 (36:34) Just cause you can doesn't mean you should. snake and it a Bit ya It was right in front of you and you missed it. I tell Paxton that like my my nine year old all the time. I'm like if I go up to your room and I find it you got to give me 10 push-ups so that boy is going to be walking around like a muscle man. Speaker 3 (36:53) Yes, you're nine year old? Yeah. My 57 year old? Same thing. I can't find this. I can't find that. it man looking. Yeah. Did you man look? That's perfect. Man looking. Yes. Did you? Obviously he's man looking because it's right in front of you. Yes. my gosh. Speaker 1 (37:11) of my kiddos will go, I don't see it. And lazy Susan's like in the spice cabinet and where the whatever is. And I'll be like really, and you didn't see it. Mom, mom, no Speaker 3 (37:13) We've got Speaker 2 (37:23) One of my kids misplaced his Super Bowl ring or whatever. He couldn't find it. And it was like right there on his, one of the, family member's finger. And he's like, you don't see your ring. And he's like, no, I can't find it. he was, wow, that's so weird. It's like, if only you could see your ring. Speaker 1 (37:44) Hold on. Have been on the phone act like this is my who's been on the phone? Speaker 3 (37:50) I on my glasses. Speaker 2 (37:54) Yeah. Speaker 1 (37:55) Yeah Speaker 2 (37:57) So where there's a will there's a way determination can overcome obstacles. That's a good one. are where there's a will. Okay. B's Knee. Speaker 3 (38:06) There's a way. Speaker 1 (38:09) The bee's knees. Okay. Speaker 2 (38:10) figured you'd like that one. Speaker 3 (38:13) Speaker 2 (38:14) Look before you leap. Speaker 3 (38:16) Yep. Now what you're getting yourself into. Speaker 1 (38:19) before you dive off a catamaran. Speaker 2 (38:24) Isla Mujeres was a great time on the catamaran. Speaker 3 (38:27) And one of my favorites, especially if think about Facebook and social media, don't air your dirty laundry in public. Because you know what, when we all respond, we all react, and before social media, we had the chance to react to ourselves or maybe to a person, but it stayed within that very short group. Now, Speaker 2 (38:34) yes. Speaker 3 (38:52) You put it out there and the hole and once it's out there you cannot take it back and at the end Speaker 2 (38:58) on your relationship and you just aired Dirty Laundry about your significant other about and it really wasn't that bad but you're painting yourself in a good light and them in a bad light and you've aired this dirty laundry people have memories and they don't like the fact that you did so and so wrong or that this happened so it's very important that you're very particular about the stuff you put out there. Speaker 3 (39:21) And from a serious note, if you have an employer and you left that employer disgruntled and you talked crap about them on social media, do you think the next employer is going to want to hire you? you were bleh. No. You need to think before you speak. mean, just you. Speaker 2 (39:43) And there could be truths on what you're saying, but is that truth going to get you to where you're trying to go? Speaker 3 (39:49) Yeah. Is it the appropriate time, place, platform for you to air that out? Speaker 2 (39:53) So if I had a nickel every time, grandma said I'd be rich. Don't put the cart before the horse. Right. Get pregnant before you get married. That's shotgun wedding. You catch more flies with honey. Be nice and get what you want. I don't know. I see a lot of flies on sh*t too. Speaker 3 (39:56) Yeah. Yep. Yeah! Speaker 1 (40:13) You catch more flies with honey. When think about call centers or you need to get something done or you're just so frustrated and there's actually a human working somewhere and you are pissed off and you're mad about the situation. You go up there with attitude. Everybody else is going up there with attitude. If you want to stand out and you're nicer and you share your frustrations with your words in the right way, it is amazing what will happen because you're actually being nice. Speaker 3 (40:43) Yeah, better safe than sorry. Watch your tongue, hold your thoughts, hold your voice, because in the long run, you're gonna be glad that you held back before you just spewed it out into the universe. So many times. So many safe than sorry. yeah, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Fix it before it breaks. In other words, don't be the reason it breaks. Let's just stop it before it. Stop that bullet before it rolls downhill and you can't be under control anymore. I don't know if that was one or not, but it was not a great Speaker 2 (41:17) Well, you said that you're full of them, like the cow ate the cabbage, you know. Speaker 3 (41:21) My mom will tell you that. you how to cow eat the cabbage. Speaker 2 (41:25) If you have an idiom that we didn't cover, we covered a lot. There's a lot down here in the South. There may be some where you're from, the region that you're from or the area. Share. We'd love to hear. We appreciate if you're going to share it. Go ahead and share what it means so that we don't miss the interpretation there in the process. We'd love to have you follow us, subscribe to us wherever you catch our podcast. Please share, tell a friend and comment. We just really appreciate you. Just like the drink that we had today from Ron. Speaker 1 (41:55) Yeah Speaker 2 (41:56) That's so exciting. Speaker 3 (41:58) And not to interrupt you, but we have some listeners and followers from different countries. And a lot of times our sayings here, even in the United States, are very different than like over in Europe. how fun would it be to compare some of your sayings to ours that might be fun. So if you've got anything to give to us and submit to us, that would be fun. That would be a nice little comparison. Speaker 2 (42:23) comment. We definitely follow and watch all of that. And we appreciate you for being here. Go ahead and try a dirty Dr. Pepper, you know, get some Texas up and wherever you're at. We appreciate you. And thank you for being here. Cheers to you.
